Our Presentation : Counseling Clients with Dementia and other Mental Conditions
Estate planning professionals increasingly serve clients facing mental illness or diminished capacity. This presentation by Elijah Keyes explores how to identify capacity levels, manage undue influence risks, and meet ethical duties while preserving client autonomy. Attendees will gain practical strategies for assessing capacity under California law, communicating effectively with impaired clients, and documenting decisions to protect both client and attorney.
About Our Speaker:
Elijah Keyes’ interest in estate planning and special needs began as a child where he saw the effects of long term mental illness in his household. Since becoming an attorney, Elijah has worked exclusively in the areas of estate planning, special needs, elder law, and tax. Elijah is recognized as a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. He currently volunteers on the California Lawyer’s Association Education Committee for Trust and Estates. Elijah is also a member of the Alzheimer’s Association Champion’s Circle, the Foundation Fighting Blindness, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Elijah is a former professor of law at Golden Gate University and frequently speaks to attorneys and community groups on a range of issues related to special needs trusts, estate planning, trust administration, probate, and conservatorships. Elijah lives in Milpitas with his wife, two children, and pets. He enjoys DIY home improvement projects.
